How to Apply for Teaching Jobs in New Zealand 2025: Requirements and Relocation Grants

New Zealand is currently recruiting overseas-trained teachers to join its 105,000-strong education workforce, offering opportunities to fill teaching vacancies across schools, kura, and early childhood centres.

The Ministry of Education is also providing relocation grants of up to NZD 10,000 (GST inclusive) to support qualified teachers moving to the country.

Requirements Before You Apply

Teaching in New Zealand is a trusted profession guided by high standards of integrity, competence, and effective practice. Overseas teachers must meet the following conditions before applying:

  • Teacher Registration: You must be registered with the Teaching Council of New Zealand.

  • Practising Certificate: A current practising certificate is mandatory to begin teaching.

  • Job Offer: Teachers with confirmed employment offers are prioritised for processing.

  • Compliance with Code of Conduct: All applicants are expected to meet the professional standards set out in Our Code, Our Standards | Ngā Tikanga Matatika, Ngā Paerewa.

Documentation and Eligibility

Applications are processed online through Hapori Matatū, the Teaching Council’s platform. You must provide:

  • Verified proof of identity (specific forms apply if you reside overseas or in New Zealand).

  • Evidence of satisfactory teacher training.

  • English language competency proof.

  • Overseas police clearance.

  • Copies of qualifications, transcripts, and a Teaching IQA (International Qualifications Assessment) report.

  • Testimonial letters from previous employers.

  • Teaching practice assessments (including appraisals or observations).

  • Induction and mentoring evidence.

  • Statements of professional standing from relevant authorities.

  • An updated CV.

The Teaching Council considers overseas qualifications pre-approved or assessed by NZQA (New Zealand Qualifications Authority) as sufficient. Exceptions may be made for qualifications such as UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or US state licenses, provided they are supported by teaching experience and appraisal materials.

Applications are processed online through Hapori Matatū, the Teaching Council’s platform. More details for overseas-trained teachers are available on the Teaching Council of New Zealand website.

Relocation Support

Overseas-trained teachers moving to New Zealand with an approved job offer may be eligible for an Overseas Relocation Grant worth up to NZD 10,000. More information is available on the Education Workforce website.

Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition

Teachers registered in Australia may qualify for a New Zealand practising certificate under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act (TTMRA), streamlining the process for Australian-trained professionals.

Sector Placement

Teacher registration and certification in New Zealand are not sector-specific. Once certified, teachers may be employed in early childhood, primary, or secondary education. It is up to the employer to determine if the candidate meets the qualifications and requirements for a specific role, particularly in early childhood centres where licensing requirements may vary.

Outlook

The initiative is expected to strengthen New Zealand’s education sector by attracting skilled professionals from overseas, while also providing financial support for relocation. With a clear application process and government backing, New Zealand presents a strong opportunity for foreign teachers seeking to build careers abroad.
